The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 - HR4040

Left, Right, or Middle, this affects you.

If you believe, as I do, that our Congress is filled with men and women who truly want to do a good job, than you have to believe that HR4040 was well-intentioned. Unfortunately, well-intentioned does not always mean well-thought out. In the case of HR4040, it was not well thought out. In fact, it is potentially disasterous. How, you ask? Well, HR4040 was intended to address the scandals of the past few years involving lead in toys, poison in this, that, and the other thing that are the result of poor quality control and corner-cutting in our primarily imported products from mass-manufacturers. It calls for independent third-party testing for lead and phthalates for products intended children under the age of 13, including hand-made products, and products that are being resold! You heard me, even resellers are not, that means thrift stores, eBay, Criagslist, and Etsy, even garage sales...if it is intended for a child under the age of 13, the product must be certified safe. Clothing, toys, even books. Obviously, this is nonsense! Everyone I know has supplemented their children's wardrobes, education, and play with hand-me-downs and thrift store finds and are more and more are discovering hand-made items on Etsy, eBay, or Craigslist. The impact of this legislation cannot be will be devastating.

Want to read more? Trent at The Simple Dollar talked about it in this post with some helpful links to dig more deeply, as does Pretty Organizer in her post, and Cool Mom Picks wraps it all up for you here.

I urge you to look it up yourself and then, please, contact your Representative and Senators demanding that this travesty be stopped. Did I mention this bill goes into effect FEBRUARY 10? This is not a "someday" thing...this is right now!
